On January 1, it will happen again. Pasadena will host the annual Rose Parade, and thousands of people across the country will gaze at the colorful floats and enjoy the marching bands. They’ll see impossibly scenic shots of the city. They’ll hear the hosts repeat over and over what a beautiful, warm, sunshiny day it is in Southern California. And those watching from less idyllic locales (weather-wise, anyway) will start making plans to move to Pasadena.

It’s hard not to be inspired by better weather when snow is stacked up outside your door or daydream about living in one of the most desirable areas across the country, especially when it’s being splashed across your television set. Not surprisingly, the Rose Parade has been the impetus for many a cross-country move.

Pasadena events in the fall are fun, entertaining, and educational.

People are moving to Pasadena communities like Villas at The Ambassador Gardens for great access to the Rose Parade.

“No one keeps statistics on how many Snow-Belt denizens have watched the Rose Parade or the Rose Bowl game and then bolted for the West Coast,” said the Los Angeles Times in an article that first addressed the trend a dozen years ago. “But among Southern Californians, particularly among residents of the San Gabriel Valley, home of the parade and the world-famous stadium, there is a fondly held — if fuzzily documented — belief that every year, people in frigid climes sit in front of their television sets on New Year’s Day and become transfixed. They drink in the lushness of the parade and the sight of what appear to be deliriously happy people sitting in short-sleeved shirts, surrounded by velvety mountains and turquoise skies, as if the telecast were an ad for a resort — alluring, beckoning, even taunting. And then they vow somehow, someday, to move to Southern California.”

This article and numerous others recount tales of people across the country, who “marveled at the sight of the Pasadena spectators, people ‘inadequately dressed’ for most other parts of the country on New Year’s Day, ‘people with no hats, no gloves, no mittens.’ According to a study from moving and storage company SpareFoot, one in 10 people relocate because of the weather. And, interestingly enough, it was “a severe Indiana winter during 1872–73 (that) prompted a group of friends from Indianapolis to form an investment group with the purpose of moving to the warmer climate of Southern California,” according to the City of Pasadena’s website. “Sent to scout the area, D. M. Berry recommended purchasing a portion of the Rancho San Pasqual, which later became Pasadena.”

Of course, those who move to Pasadena have much more to love than the sunshine once they arrive here. “Pasadena may be best known for hosting its iconic Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl, but it’s also home to a wide variety of cultural amenities, shopping venues, incredible restaurants and a wealth of family friendly activities,” said Los Angeles Properties.
