On January 1, it will happen again. Pasadena will host the annual Rose Parade, and thousands of people across the country will gaze at the colorful floats and enjoy the marching bands. This article and numerous others recount tales of people across the country, who “marveled at the sight of the Pasadena spectators, people ‘inadequately dressed’ for most other parts of the country on New Year’s Day, ‘people with no hats, no gloves, no mittens.’ According to a study from moving and storage company SpareFoot, one in 10 people relocate because of the weather. And, interestingly enough, it was “a severe Indiana winter during 1872–73 (that) prompted a group of friends from Indianapolis to form an investment group with the purpose of moving to the warmer climate of Southern California,” according to the City of Pasadena’s website. “Sent to scout the area, D. M. Berry recommended purchasing a portion of the Rancho San Pasqual, which later became Pasadena.”
